Parkway Host Weymouth Under the Lights!

Parkway v Weymouth | Match Preview

By Jack Hobbs

Plymouth Parkway will be looking for a quick bounce back against freshly relegated Weymouth following their opening day defeat to Walton & Hersham on Saturday.

The Yellows found themselves leading the Swans twice thanks to a debut brace from Rocky Neal and a stunning volley from Mikey Williams, but ultimately were defeated 6-3 after defensive frailties were exposed.

Speaking on the defeat, Parkway’s number 10 and Saturday’s captain, Rio Garside, said: “On the way back, we were obviously all disappointed. We felt the first half gave us a kind of a lift and we thought that we can get something from the game. But obviously that didn’t happen.

“I think we’re just now looking on to Tuesday, and we got to put it right. What we’ve done wrong, where we went wrong. We had a real threat I felt in the attack third and Rocky looks a real presence, and a real threat.

“He’s added something different to the group. I feel like we scored three goals away from home, and we’ve lost a game which shouldn’t happen at any level. It just goes to show the level we’re playing that there’s teams that are going to punish you if you make individual mistakes.

“When they went to 10 men, I feel like we should have really capitalized on that, and to then concede three goals is extremely disappointing.

“We’re looking to put it right on Tuesday. We’ve got an opportunity to do that under lights and I think the boys are ready to go.”

Tuesday’s opponents should present another tough test to Parkway.

The Terras have dropped back into the Southern League after a 23rd place finish in the National League South last season, five years after they were promoted to the National League via the playoffs.

Weymouth were unceremoniously welcomed back to the league with a 1-3 home defeat at the hands of freshly promoted Evesham United, but Parkway boss Chris McPhee feels they will be a team with something to prove this season.

“There’ll be a team that will be desperate to bounce straight back up”, said McPhee after Saturday’s defeat.

“They’ll look at this league as potentially winnable. I would imagine that they’re one of five or six teams that are looking into to try and win this league.

“It’ll be a good test, not just as the individual game, but in how we can recover from such huge disappointment, such a low performance in the second half (against Walton & Hersham) and try to bounce back.

“There were times last season where we really bounced back well, and we’ve got to draw on those experiences and those moments. It’s our first game of the season at home on our patch, and we’ve got to make sure this year our ground is a fortress, and its somewhere teams don’t look forward coming to.

“They know they’re going to be under pressure. They know they’re going to have cause us problems. They’re going to have to be athletic and physical, and that’ll be something we’re asking from the players, to be really dynamic, as we were on Saturday, out of possession, but better in transition.

“There’ll be lots of things that we’ll try and get across (to the players), but having our identity is crucial. I’ve seen that it can get us results, it can get us create us chances, but we have to be better defensively, otherwise it’s going to be a very, very long, hard season if we keep giving goals away like we did on Saturday.”
