One Win from History
A Different ViewBy Jack May
Very few people get a chance to make history.
I probably won’t do it. They don’t really have history books for part-time writers, full-time bus drivers.
Nobody cares that on 17th October 2026 I drove a bus around a pre-planned and mind-numbingly boring route a few times.
Nobody will look back through the archives to find who it was that drove the 84 to Holsworthy that day.
There are no Youtube videos on The Biggest Bus Route Upsets of All Time.
But some people do get a chance to make history.
Some people do get a chance to end up in the archives, on the Youtube videos, on Sky Sports, on the BBC.
And this weekend, the players and staff at Plymouth Parkway have the chance to become those people.
This weekend, all of those involved at Parkway right now have the chance to make, and become part of, history.
A win over Chertsey Town is all it takes.
That’s literally it.
90 minutes to beat Chertsey Town.
No offence to Chertsey Town but that is a doable way of making history.
If all it takes to make history is to beat Chertsey Town then, by god, GET OUT THERE AND BEAT CHERTSEY TOWN.
For anybody who has been living under a rock for the last few weeks; if Plymouth Parkway beat Chertsey Town on Saturday afternoon, they are in the FA Cup – yes, the actual FA Cup – for the first time ever.
Ergo, making HISTORY.
They’ve beaten Gosport Borough, Sholing and Horsham to get this far.
They’ve smashed in eight goals en route, conceding three.
They’re second in the Southern League, scoring goals for fun.
New ownership, new horizons.
The stars are aligning, it seems. The story is writing itself.
League One and Two clubs in the draw. It’s got to be Argyle, hasn’t it? Start the rivalry.
Or maybe an away day at Hillsborough or the King Power Stadium, to take on Sheffield Wednesday or Leicester.
Maybe we’ll see Salford City or Luton Town gracing the grass at Bolitho.
Maybe we’ll see, after just one more win, our local lads, most of whom oh so nearly made it, living out their dream in full again.
There are upsets every year. Why not Parkway in 2026?
Even if it doesn’t end in a win against the big boys, why not just a moment? Who remembers when Havant & Waterlooville went one up against Liverpool at Anfield?
Why not Garside putting Parkway one up away at Leicester?
90 minutes are all that stands between Parkway and their entry into the oldest cup competition in football.
They have deserved thoroughly to get where they are, and they have demonstrated they have what it takes to go one further.
And if it doesn’t work out, then it doesn’t work out.
But this will still be the Parkway team that got Plymouth talking.
Go out and give them one more thing to talk about.
Best of luck, boys.
