After a 2 week break due to last Saturday’s postponed game with Evesham United, Parkway returned to action with a visit to Larkhall Athletic. 3 changes were made from the 1-1 home draw with Melksham Town with Finley Craske replacing Harrison Davis, Tom Bath in for the injured Rhys Shirley and River Allen replaced in midfield by Ethan Mitchell returning for his second work experience loan spell from Plymouth Argyle.

In good playing conditions, Parkway got off to sharp start, moving the ball well through midfield forcing the hosts on to the defensive. On 7 minutes a Jack Crago header from their first corner was comfortably saved by Shaun Semmens. Parkway began to dominate possession and territory forcing a couple of early free kicks which were well defended. With Matt Andrew, Billy Palfrey and Mitchell controlling midfield and Crago and Gabby Rogers looking dangerous on the flanks,

Parkway continued to force the pace and on 15 minutes a strong run forward by Ryan Lane saw him find Crago whose shot was headed away. Larkhall were competing well in midfield and defending well but were unable to gain too much forward momentum with the Parkway defence looking solid and relatively untroubled. On 17minutes Crago saw another shot blocked after good work by Rogers. A Parkway break on 20 minutes saw good link up play between Andrew and Rogers who released Bath on the right with his deep cross just drifting beyond the far post. Parkway continued to threaten but at times their final ball let them down with the host’s defence coping well and restricting any clear cut chances.

On 23 minutes a determined run from deep by Callum Rose saw his low shot from around 35 yards pushed behind by Semmens with Rogers shot from the resultant corner being blocked. Parkway continued to apply pressure with Larkhall battling well in midfield to stem the tide with central defender Josh Jones winning the majority of the aerial exchanges.

On 25 minutes a Parkway attack along the left saw another strong run by Lane see him link well with Bath who found Andrew whose shot from around 18 yards was well saved by Semmens. Lane continued to cause the home defence problems and on 28 minutes a neat exchange with Palfrey saw the latter’s shot deflected behind for another corner. With Mitchell looking strong and composed in midfield and regularly breaking up play, Parkway continued to apply pressure but were unable to penetrate the Larkhall back line. On 31 minutes the hosts Brad Norris received the game’s first yellow card for a strong challenge on Andrew.

On 33 minutes a flowing passage of play along the right featuring Bath, Andrew and Craske set up Rogers who shot well wide from around 20 yards. Despite continuing to dominate possession and looking comfortable in defence, Parkway were unable to make their pressure pay as the hosts continued to compete well denying Parkway any clear cut chances. On 37 minutes Daniel Demkiv became the second Larkhall player to be booked after bundling over Kyle Moore as they both competed for a loose ball in the 18 yard area. Semmens then saved a Palfrey free kick from 25 yards as Parkway continued in the ascendancy but were still unable to make the break through. However they almost took the lead on 40 minutes when good work along the right by Craske saw his cross find Bath whose shot on the turn was pushed behind one handed at full stretch by Semmens.

The next attack saw the keeper forced to race outside his area to clear a long ball but his mishit attempted clearance fell to Bath who reacted smartly to fire his 30 yard effort narrowly over the unguarded goal. The final 10 minutes of the half saw Larkhall have their best spell of the game forcing Moore into action for the first time. On 42 minutes Moore saved a close range effort with his quick clearance finding Andrew who linked well with Craske and Crago to set up Bath who stabbed his effort just wide from close range. Larkhall continued to play on the counter and on 44 minutes Demkiv went clear only to be denied by a fine block by Moore who reacted well to smother the loose ball in the 6 yard area. The final action of the half saw Parkway break clear and create a 4 on 1 situation with only a fine block tackle on Bath by Daniel Restorick denying the striker a shot.

A competitive half with Parkway generally dominating possession and territory by playing attractive football, creating the better chances but unable to breach a solid Larkhall defence with Jones particularly impressive.

Larkhall replaced Daniel Dodimead with Dale Evans at half time and started the second half the sharper. On 49 minutes a break along their left saw the ball pulled back to Evans whose shot from around 15 yards was blocked. The game continued at an intense pace as both sides battled hard in midfield with Larkhall having upped their tempo from the first half. Parkway continued to defend well with Michael Landricombe and Rose imposing at the back, dealing confidently with the hosts attacking threat. The game took a contentious twist on 53 minutes with Norris, who had already been yellow carded in the first half, shown a straight red card after a strong challenge on Palfrey. With Larkhall forced to reorganise but still leaving 2 up front, Parkway looked to adjust and regain control and on 58 minutes Mikey Williams replaced the hard working Bath.

Parkway continued to apply pressure forcing Larkhall to defend deep and play long balls on the counter but rarely troubling the Parkway defence. On 66 minutes a forceful run by Lane saw his cross tipped on to the cross bar by Semmens resulting in a scramble in the 6 yard area with a couple of close range shots being blocked and eventually cleared behind for a corner. On 67 minutes Adam Carter replaced the tireless Andrew who once again had put in a solid shift in midfield. Williams was booked shortly after for a foul as play became scrappy despite Parkway still enjoying the majority of possession and remaining patient as they looked to probe an opening. Entering the last 15 minutes it began to look like a mistake or something special from either side may decide the outcome of the game and it proved to be the latter. On 78 minutes the ball broke in the centre of midfield to Palfrey who, showing excellent vision, awareness and technique, saw Semmens off his line and audaciously lobbed the keeper from around 45 yards to give Parkway a deserved lead. The boy doesn’t do tap ins!

Davis then replaced Rogers for Parkway with Demkiv giving way to Jack Pearson-Brown for the hosts. Parkway had the opportunity to increase their lead on 81 minutes but Lane’s angled shot on his weaker foot flew well wide after good build up play between Carter and Crago. Larkhall, making light of being a man down, made their final change on 82 minutes with Jack Goodall being replaced by Joseph Hillard who went into the back line with Jones being pushed up front the hosts went searching for an equaliser. On 87 minutes Semmens did well to block a close range effort from Carter with Harry Simons and Mitchell picking up late yellow cards as Larkhall threw men forward forcing Parkway to defend in numbers. On 90 minutes a long free kick forward by Semmens created hesitancy in the Parkway defence with a header going just over.

With 6 minutes of stoppage time being indicated, in the 93rd minute Larkhall almost grabbed a late goal with a cross from the right finding the unmarked Evans whose glancing header from around 8 yards flew narrowly wide. With Parkway holding on and defending in numbers, they eventually managed to break clear and the final action of the game saw Carter and Williams link well to set up Palfrey whose fizzing low effort from around 25 yards went just wide.

An absorbing, thoroughly entertaining game between two totally committed sides with a well organised and determined Parkway the more fluent passing side and deserving their victory having created the better chances. With more clinical finishing and composure in the final third, the margin of victory could have been greater. Larkhall as expected were well drilled, hard to break down, defended solidly and competed well throughout but were ultimately beaten by a moment of magic from Palfrey.

The win sees Parkway climb a place to 7th above Paulton Rovers on goal difference but having played 6 games less. Next Saturday Parkway travel to 6th placed Sholing, who they have yet to meet this season, in what will undoubtedly be another tough encounter with Sholing having beaten Melksham 5-0 today.
