Parkway Youth Round Up

3 - Plymouth Parkway

4 - SB

Written by Joe Pulley

Our first league defeat since November after a run of 7 wins on the bounce.

A frustrating game for the boys. A couple of decisions didn’t go our way. But besides refereeing decisions, I think we were not quite as good defensively as a team today than we usually are. We dropped all three points to a hungrier SB side.

We started well getting a lot of joy with the pace of Liam and Connor up top causing problems.

For 1-0, Connor showed great composure when he revived the ball in a bit of space to play a brilliant pass to Liam who finished well.

For 2-0, we built up play down the right-hand side and the ball came into the box, SB couldn’t clear their lines and it fell to Jude who hit the target with a volley which Liam followed up to make it 2-0. Looking good at this point.

From the second goal onwards, SB managed to get to grips with our front 2 and get more control in the game. We tried playing the long ball which SB had learned to deal with. We didn’t manage the game as well today than we have the last few months.

SB then managed to score a very scrappy goal which we should have dealt with better. 2-1.

The half-time whistle came at a good time for us to regroup after SB got back into the game.

Second half, we still didn’t get control of the game which gave SB more of a lift. We were always in the game, and we had chances to win it, but I feel SB won the fight that was needed to get the 3 points.

For 2-2, they scored a great goal on the volley giving Oscar no chance, but we should have defended the situation better. Then for 2-3, they got a penalty, which from what I have been told was a bit soft.

SB then made it 2-4 with a fantastic finish while we were chasing the equaliser. Then last kick of the game, Dennis was so brave to get himself to the ball before their keeper to set up Connor who finished well, 3-4. Loved the effort and bravery from Dennis. Full time 3-4

4 - Plymouth Parkway

0 - Ivybridge

Parkway make it 7 wins from 7 games.

Plymouth Parkway hosted the return fixture with Ivybridge Town Youth following their very first game of the season. On a dry, windy, Spring morning, Parkway was missing club captain and centre half Archie Wall for this fixture which contributed to a 3-5-2 over their normal 4-4-2 formation. This was only Parkway’s third game of the year and were going into the game conceding 3 league goals in total after 6 games played.

Both teams initially struggled to get into the game with a strong cross pitch easterly wind which proved very difficult for both teams to string passes together. Josh Bernard was very industrious in his approach play from midfield and prove provider for both Finley Walker and Rio Daley before shooting himself only to be saved by the goalkeeper.

After 10 minutes, Parkway had more of the play than Ivybridge Town and another darting run by Josh Bernard into the box drew an awkward challenge from Ivybridge’s Isaac Potter and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Finley Walker stepped up and placed it to the goalkeepers right sending him the wrong way to capitalise on the awarded penalty.

The first half continued with good possession form Parkway, but they were still unable to be clinical in the final 3rd of the pitch. Shots from Rio Daley, Mason Elliot and Liam Blackwell were either off target or saved by a very busy Ivybridge Town goalkeeper. On 25 minutes, Marley Krac had to be replaced by Billy Eccles due to picking up a small injury in the midfield battles that were now occurring. Billy had recently joined Parkway but was only himself returning from injury and soon linked up well with Jack Stevens and Rhys McShane, bringing other players ahead of them into the game.

In the latter stages of the first half, Ivybridge continued to battle, and break downplay and were rewarded with a free kick 30 yards out which came to nothing. Finley Roberts, Parkways man between the sticks, was only really tested once as the first half ended from a further free kick from Ivybridge which he held well despite the sun shining brightly in his eyes.

Parkway started the second half with more zip and pace about their play with a cross field pass from Billy Eccles which Rio Daley picked up. As always, Rio ran with endeavour, twisting and turning defenders before slotting an accurately weighted pass to striker Finley Walker who duly accepted the ball and finished from a tight angle to make it 2-0.

Parkway were now beginning to dominate play with a slight advantage from the increasing wind. Sam Rutter continued to make advanced runs with a number of crosses coming into dangerous areas but so often dealt with by strong defensive unit and very little pressure from the Parkway front players.

Ivybridge still looked threatening when they did make advances in Parkways final 3rd but were met with a tenacious defence with Cohen Newitt and Charlie Goldsworthy so often breaking up play.

Rhys McShane, Josh Bernard, and Billy Eccles continued to dominate in the middle of the park as Parkway increased their hold on the game. Rio Daly was non-stop making numerous off the ball runs and was eventually rewarded for all his handwork with an individual effort resulting in a great goal to make the score 3-0.

Parkway were unyielding for the last 15 minutes with several attempts on goal. Excellent corners into the box as direct results of these attacks should have been rewarded with more goals but it wasn’t to be with some below par heading and close-range shots which were dealt with well by the Ivybridge goalkeeper and his fellow defenders.

The final goal came from a shot from Finley Walker which hit the post then rebounded back into his pathway to be slotted home for Parkways 4th and his hat-trick on the day.

1 - Plymouth Marjon

Written by Lee Sheldon

Cup semi-final for Plymouth Parkway U11s and Marjon were the opponents. In a sunny but windy day, Marjon started the better. In a mix of styles, Parkway moved the ball around well and had some good technical ability, but Marjon showed an incredible work rate and desire.

Marjon deservedly took the lead after 10 minutes a as the ball broke loose to the lively forward and he made no mistake with a fine finish.

Parkway battled back into the game and created their own chances, but the wind caused them issues getting up the pitch. Parkway were hampered with player illness, and three players on the starting 9 would report not feeling well. Captain for the day Jake, having to come off, a massive loss.

Half time remained 1-0 to Marjon but plenty of encouragement going into the second half for the Parkway.

Second half was mostly played in the Marjon half, but they defended valiantly. Elijah trying to create and the ever-impressive Teddy showing some fantastic composure and technical ability. It was soon 1-1, Semas from distance striking the ball in the top corner. Parkway were galvanised and it lifted the lads to go after the game more. Despite a couple of chances, the game went through extra time at 1-1, a monstrous effort from both teams.

Penalties to decide, and probably the first time the Parkway boys have experienced such a thing, and it showed. Fortunately for Parkway, it was the same for Marjon. From 10 penalties only one was scored and that was Isaac, burying his when it was most definitely needed! Brilliant celebrations in what was a very tight game! Louis Getting MOM for Parkway with a fine display throughout! Onto the final in May and what a day to look forward to.

A big thank you to Plymouth Marjon and a huge effort from them and losing on penalties is never nice. We wish them well for the remainder of the season.
