Parkway Go Again at Uxbridge After Cup Progress

Uxbridge vs Parkway | Match Preview

By Mike Parrish

Fresh from navigating their way through a nervy Devon County Cup tie at Exmouth Town, Chris McPhee’s side now turn their attention back to league business with a long trip to West London, where Uxbridge await with problems of their own and three points very much on the agenda.

Cup progression was welcome, if not entirely convincing. A 3-2 win under the lights secured a semi-final place and, just as importantly, offered a reminder of what this Parkway squad can look like when the pieces fall into place. Ryan Brett’s assured display in the holding role brought balance, Callum Hall’s return to a central midfield position produced one of those trademark finishes, and Gunner Franke took his goal well with a tireless shift up top. Yet even in victory there were reminders of fragility, with Luke McCormick forced into a string of late saves as Exmouth finished strongly.

Encouragement, then, but also food for thought. The league form remains the uncomfortable truth. Four straight defeats have dragged Parkway back into trouble, and there is a growing sense that performances need to translate into points quickly. Saturday’s fixture carries extra weight, not least because Uxbridge were the side who exposed Parkway earlier in the campaign, leaving Bolitho Park with a commanding 3-0 win built on ruthless set-piece efficiency. Massimo Giamattei’s standout display that afternoon still lingers in the memory.

Since then, Parkway’s journey has been uneven. Five points in nine league games is the current scenario, but one statistic tells its own story: the Yellows have not scored a first-half league goal since the opening day of November. In a division where every minute matters, slow starts have proven costly.

Uxbridge, though, are far from flying. Their season has stalled in recent weeks, with just one league win in ten, though that victory arrived at Dorchester last weekend to ease the pressure. A midweek 5-0 Middlesex Charity Cup win at Honeycroft will have lifted spirits further, and sitting 11th in the table, the Reds will view this as a chance to finally build something resembling consistency.

On paper, it is a meeting of two sides searching for traction. For Parkway, the return of Shane White, Rocky Neal and Reece Shanley bolsters the travelling group, while McPhee will be hopeful that lessons from Exmouth can be applied rather than admired. Rotation is no longer a luxury. This is about impact, clarity, and doing the basics well, particularly from the first whistle.

There is no grand narrative to hide behind. No false dawn. Just another long journey, another tight league table, and another chance to stop the slide.
