Time for an Encore at the Theatre of Trees

Parkway v Wimborne Town | Match Preview

By Mike Parrish

In recent weeks, fixtures involving Plymouth Parkway have regularly been described as “must win”. With just eleven games remaining, that phrase now carries even greater weight if Parkway are to give themselves a genuine chance of remaining in the Southern League Premier South.

Following defeat to Hungerford Town, the club parted company with manager Chris McPhee, with Stuart Dudley stepping in as interim manager until the end of the season. Dudley’s first game in charge came on Saturday at Taunton Town, but familiar problems resurfaced as the Peacocks claimed the points, leaving Parkway on a run of five consecutive league defeats.

Confidence remains fragile and the challenge of converting effort into attacking threat continues to be an issue. Rocky Neal once again worked tirelessly leading the line, often in isolation, while Dudley acknowledged afterwards that the players’ effort and commitment could not be questioned.

Now attention turns back to Bolitho Park and a crucial sequence of home fixtures that could shape Parkway’s season.

There may be encouragement on the team news front, with influential defender Taylor Scarff and the dangerous James Watts-Barciela both pushing for a return. There has also been talk of potential additions ahead of Tuesday’s game as the club looks to strengthen for the run-in.

Off the pitch, the message has been clear. With three home games on the spin, Parkway are calling on the Plymouth public to play their part as the club looks to generate the atmosphere needed to help turn momentum.

Wimborne Town arrive in Devon with their own objectives. The Magpies sit 12th in the table on 41 points and will be keen to put further distance between themselves and the bottom end of the division. After a heavy defeat to Gloucester City, Wimborne have picked up four points from their last four matches, including a draw with fellow strugglers Yate Town at the weekend.

For Parkway, however, the focus must remain firmly internal.

The message in the past week has been about unity, belief and effort. Now it must translate into points.

It does not have to be pretty at this stage of the season. It simply has to be effective.

Bolitho Park was built for weeks like this and if Plymouth can help make the Theatre of Trees tick once again, Parkway could yet write an encore that would be talked about for years.
