Following a host of changes for the midweek County Cup victory over Exmouth Town, Karl Curtis returned to a more familiar starting XI in Hampshire. Aaron Dearing, Toby Down, Carlo and Rio Garside, Mikey Williams, Rocky Neal and Reece Thomson were all included.
Parkway arrived looking to build on a memorable week, having secured a place in the FA Cup First Round Proper before progressing in the County Cup. However, the Yellows were unable to carry that momentum into Saturday’s contest, struggling to impose themselves against a determined Basingstoke side.
The hosts started on the front foot, putting Parkway under pressure and winning their individual battles across the pitch. Despite the conditions affecting both sides, Basingstoke adapted more effectively and began to find ways through the visitors.
Parkway struggled to test Simon Grant in the Dragons goal as clear opportunities proved difficult to come by as Basingstoke disrupted the Yellows’ attempts to build attacks. The home side continued to ask questions, and their pressure eventually told in the 34th minute.
Lewis Colwell’s delivery from the right struck the crossbar, with Scott Armsworth reacting quickest to the rebound and finding the net to give Basingstoke a deserved lead.
The goal reflected the balance of the first half, with Parkway unable to establish the attacking rhythm that has served them so well throughout the campaign. A late free-kick offered a chance to threaten before the interval, but the effort struck the Basingstoke wall as the hosts went into the break ahead.
The Yellows needed a response after the restart, but Basingstoke continued to make life difficult. Their intensity and organisation limited Parkway’s opportunities to play through the lines, while the hosts remained capable of creating danger when possession turned over.
The second goal arrived in the 71st minute. A quick throw-in caught Parkway out, allowing Basingstoke to work the ball into Joe O’Loughlin, who finished into the far corner to double the advantage.
Parkway searched for a way back into the contest, but the attacking threat never fully materialised. Basingstoke managed the closing stages effectively, and the Yellows were left to reflect on an afternoon when too many individual battles went against them.
Speaking after the match, manager Karl Curtis was candid in his assessment, acknowledging that Parkway had fallen below the standards expected of them.
“It was a bad day,” Curtis admitted. “You have good teams and, over a season, you’re going to have bad days. Today was one of them.”
The manager was quick to credit Basingstoke, recognising the way the hosts approached the contest and the determination they showed throughout.
“They won their duels more than us today. Credit to them, I thought they were very good. They were relentless and definitely deserved to win.”
Curtis also accepted responsibility for his own part in the performance, revealing that aspects of the preparation during the week had not followed the usual routine.
He added: “I’m going to take full responsibility for today. There were a couple of things during the week that we did or didn’t do that normally happen. That’s a learning for me, and I’ll take that on the chin and reflect on it.”
Despite the disappointment, the Parkway boss was keen to maintain perspective. The squad has enjoyed an impressive campaign so far, but Saturday served as a reminder that sustained success requires consistency, particularly when conditions and opponents make it difficult to play at the team’s usual level.
Curtis also dismissed suggestions that the recent FA Cup attention had contributed to the performance, pointing instead to the challenge ahead, with 3 league fixtures scheduled across the next ten days.
The immediate opportunity to respond comes on Tuesday evening, when Parkway return to Bolitho Park for a home fixture under the lights against Gloucester City
Curtis believes the character within the squad will be crucial as the Yellows look to put the defeat behind them.
“This group has got a really good character about them,” he said. “Whenever we have a bad day like this, they tend to bounce back. They can’t wait to get back out on the grass again.”
The manager also stressed that the defeat should not define a group that has earned its position through hard work and quality, while making clear that standards must return quickly.
Saturday was a difficult lesson for Parkway. The conditions were testing, Basingstoke were the better side, and the Yellows were unable to produce the performance required to take anything from Hampshire.
There is little time to dwell on it, however. Tuesday brings the chance to respond, learn from the afternoon and show the character Curtis knows his squad possesses.
The focus now turns to Bolitho, and the response under the lights.
