Full Match Report

Parkway travelled to 16th placed Harrow Borough looking for a vastly improved performance after their heavy midweek defeat to Yate Town. Harrow were fresh from a 2-1 midweek home win over high flying Chesham United. Parkway made 5 changes including 2 new loan signings, goalkeeper Adam Parkes from Plymouth Argyle and midfielder Toby Stephens from Yeovil Town.

Along with the returning Harrison King, Callum Rose, and Billy Palfrey, they replaced Kyle Moore, Tyler Ashmead, Jack Crago, Michael Landricombe and Reece Shanley in the starting line-up.

Both sides made a lively start with Parkes quickly being called into action making a fine save low down at his near post on 3 minutes.

Harrow forced a couple of early corners which were comfortably dealt with by the Parkway defence and it was the visitors who took the lead on 9 minutes from their first meaningful attack. A long ball saw the speedy Ben Seymour get beyond the last defender and just beat the host’s onrushing keeper Charlie Taylor to the ball un-selfishingly laying it off to the supporting Ryan Lane who, on the run, lifted his shot into the empty net from around 15 yards.

The game settled into a pattern with the hosts having the better quality of possession with Parkway looking to play on the counter. On 11 minutes Parkes did well to tip over an effort from distance by George Moore as Harrow continued to threaten with Parkes then saving well from Kamon-Sherell Assidjo on 15 minutes after good Harrow build up play along the left.

The game continued at a high tempo with Parkway forcing their first corner on 15 minutes with Stephen’s quality delivery being pushed over from just under the crossbar by Taylor. From the resultant corner Jarred Lewington headed just wide and was bundled over in the process.

After lengthy treatment the game recommenced but Lewington was unable to continue and was replaced by Jack Crago on 22 minutes. Harrow continued to dictate the pace of the game looking to attack along the flanks and switch the direction of play at every opportunity. However Parkway continued to compete well in midfield and defend solidly restricting the hosts to few scoring chances.

With Moore influential in midfield for Harrow and Ahmet Biler pushing forward along the left, Harrow continued to dominate possession with Biler firing an effort well wide on 31 minutes. Parkway continued to defend well with the outstanding Rose and Austen Booth combining well at the heart of the Parkway defence denying the hosts turning their approach play into any clear cut chances.

Parkway continued to play on the counter attack and on 37 minutes a neat passage of play along the right between Seymour and Stephens set up King who shot wide from around 20 yards. Seymour then drove an angled effort narrowly wide after an astute defence splitting pass by Mikey Williams as Parkway came more into the game.

On 39 minutes a clearance by Harrow saw the ball recycled by the Parkway midfield trio with Crago going clear along the left with his cross flying across the 6 yard area with no one able to apply a finishing touch. Harrow continued to have the majority of possession but Parkway matched their intensity, remained well organised and stuck to their game plan which continued to frustrate the hosts whose scoring chances remained limited. Approaching the break Harrow forced a couple of corners which Parkway defended well with Moore pulling his shot just wide on 41 minutes.

A half of contrasting styles with the hosts generally dominating possession with their patient build up play from the back and Parkway content to contain and counter attack. Both defences remained on top with few clear chances being created with Parkway clinically converting the one they created.

The 2nd half began in similar fashion and on 53 minutes Moore’s dangerous cross from the right was confidently gathered by Parkes as Harrow continued to press high. Palfrey, Callum Hall and the neat and tidy Stephens continued to work hard and compete strongly in midfield winning their fair share of second balls as he hosts continued to threaten.

On 55 minutes a Parkway break along the left saw Lane and Stephens link well with Lane’s cross eventually being cleared. Parkway had a let off on 55 minutes after Brosnan’s shot had been blocked, Noel-Williams follow up close range effort from the rebound cannoned off the post and was eventually scrambled away to safety.

With the intensity increasing, on 57 minutes Olatunbosun Adenola was cautioned after bringing down Crago just inside the Harrow half and preventing him from going clear. Harrow’s next attack then saw Williams booked for a foul on the edge of the penalty area with the free kick being headed behind for a corner as the host’s pressure increased.

On 62 minutes Harrow made their first change with James Ewington replacing the hard working Assidjo. With the game now opening up and the hosts leaving more space at the back as they pressed for an equaliser, on 65 minutes Imran Uche was booked for tripping Seymour inside the centre circle as he threatened to break clear. Harrow continued to push forward in numbers and on 68 minutes the dangerous Brosnan raced clear along the left with his powerful angled drive from around 18 yards being superbly tipped behind at full stretch by Parkes.

From the resultant corner the clearance came out to Moore whose snapshot from around 15 yards smacked against the crossbar with once again the Parkway defence reacting quickly to clear.

On 70 minutes Aaron Goulty replaced the hard working Seymour who once again had put in an impressive shift with Crago now being pushed further forward as the lone striker.

Harrow continued on the offensive with Parkway at times holding on but defending resolutely with the hosts still unable to create many clear chances despite their dominance of possession. Great Evans replaced Keegan Bloom on 75 minutes as Harrow continued to press but it was Parkway who almost doubled their lead on 78 minutes. With Harrow pushing forward and leaving large gaps at the back, a long ball found Crago racing clear on the right with his fierce shot being beaten away by Taylor for arguably his first save of the half.

On 80 minutes Biler was booked for a crude challenge on Crago preventing him from going clear after being released by a good ball by Stephens. Parkway then created another gilt edged chance on 82 minutes. A fine challenge by Williams in his own half saw him charge forward and release Crago who cut in from the left but was just unable to round Taylor to get his shot away.

Crago was in action again a couple of minutes later after good work along the left between Lane and Hall set him up only to delay his shot enabling a covering defender to clear off the line.

With full time approaching Parkway looked to attempt to retain possession and manage the game out but it was Harrow who continued to press forcing another corner on 88 minutes which was comfortably gathered by Parkes after a poor quality delivery. Parkway continued to defend solidly and on 89 minutes Parkes did well to anticipate a long ball which he managed to grab just ahead of the incoming Evans.

With 4 minutes of stoppage time being added and Harrow looking to rescue something from the game, Parkway held on to see the game out, keep a rare clean sheet and secure a much needed 3 points.

A gritty, hardworking, much improved all round display from Parkway after their inept midweek performance at Yate. Solid in defence and tenacious in midfield but without creating too many chances and lacking too much creativity, they stuck to their game plan with the victory seeing them climb a couple of places off the foot of the table to 20th. Had they converted one of their 3 late chances, the score line would have had a more comfortable look.

Parkway now embark on a run of 4 consecutive home games in the next 2 weeks in 3 different competitions. The first comes next Saturday when now bottom of the table Hendon visit Bolitho Park. Hendon had a creditable 2-2 home draw today with National League South side Chippenham Town in the FA Cup and will now face a tough midweek replay while Parkway have a week to rest, recover and spend some time on the training ground.
