FESTIVAL of football returns to Bolitho
By Rob Kershaw
A summer without football is always difficult to get through for fans, but never fear Parkway fans, pre-season is finally set to get up and running.
As is tradition, Parkway will face off against League One side Plymouth Argyle to work themselves back into the rhythm of things and take some never-unwelcome experience from playing one of the 72 Football League sides
Argyle have walked away winners in all of the last three fixtures, winning 5-1 last summer having scored four in the two years previous, winning 2-0 in 2019, before the boys in yellow pushed them hard in 2020 in a 2-1 defeat. River Allen got Parkway’s goal last year.
Competing, and scoring, against a side five leagues above is never a mean feat, so there has been plenty of reason for promise for Parkway following the Argyle meetings in recent years.
The Greens will come to Bolitho this weekend having won 12 games away from home last season in all competitions.
They had been sustaining a healthy promotion bid for much of the season as they went in search of their first Championship season in 11 years, but their form fell away at the wrong moment as they finished seventh having won exactly half of their league fixtures, drawing 11 and losing the other 12.
Parkway’s home and away form was tremendous last season, winning 18 at Bolitho during our ground share season with Truro.
14 of those contributed to the 26 victories in the league last year as they won the Southern League Division One South by three points from Frome.
In terms of signings, we’ve been busy! From a coaching perspective, Karl Curtis returns to Parkway to be Lee Hobbs’ right-hand-man in the dugout, with Matt Godfree heading across to the position of first-team coach.
Rio Garside, having spent the 21/22 season at Bolitho with Truro, has made the switch to Plymouth ahead of the new season, with striker Theo Simpson also acquired by Lee over the summer.
We said hello and welcome to Dan Rooney and Tyler Ashmead, who popped over from Truro and Tyler Ashmead, who those with a keen eye may remember after his involvement in two goals – one of which he scored – for Clevedon Town against Parkway a few seasons ago.
The dotted line was then signed by striker Ben Seymour, who showed more than a few glimpses of his class at Exeter City in two full seasons with the Grecians, scoring three and assisting two in all competitions.
It is always worth saying a big thank you to the five players that went their separate ways over the summer, but with a changed squad and even greater ambitions than before, Parkway are ready to get their pre-season campaign underway.
