Parkway suffer defeat in the capital

Despite numerous games in the league being postponed today due to the recent wet weather, Parkway’s game at 7th placed Metropolitan Police went ahead on an almost perfect playing surface with no major issues. Parkway made 3 changes from their narrow 1-0 defeat at league leaders Weston Super Mare on Bank Holiday Monday with Austen Booth, Callum Hall and Jack Rhead starting in place of Callum Rose, Billy Palfrey and Jack Crago respectively.

Full Match Report

The hosts made a sharp start with Herson Rodrigues-Alves forcing an early save from Adam Parkes on 2 minutes after good build up play along their left. Parkway responded on 4 minutes with Rhead forcing a corner which was comfortably defended.

Met Police continued to dictate the pace and on 7 minutes a neat passage of play through midfield between Luke Robertson and Ollie Knight set up Rodrigues-Alves who fired over from around 20 yards. Parkway continued to compete well and on 10 minutes Bernard Tanner did well to intercept a dangerous Parkway through ball. The hosts continued to look threatening with their quick passing and movement and on 15 minutes Joshua Keeya went clear forcing a corner from which a Rodrigues-Alves shot was blocked for another corner.

Parkway gradually got to the pace of the game and created a period of pressure with Ryan Lane and Hall combining to force a corner. On 21 minutes good play between Dan Rooney and Rio Garside set up Rhead whose angled drive was tipped over by Liam Beach in the home goal. However it was the hosts who took the lead, arguably against the run of play, on 26 minutes. Lane saw yellow for a foul wide on the right and from the resultant free kick swung in on the wind to the far post, former Chelsea youth product Martell Taylor-Crossdale poked home the loose ball from close range after hesitation and lack of concentration in the Parkway defence.

Play continued to switch from end to end with Parkway playing well but unable to create any clear chances with their final ball lacking precision as the home defence stood firm. On 28 minutes Taylor-Crossdale saw yellow after failing to retreat from a Parkway free kick in central midfield.

The hosts continued to look dangerous going forward and on 32 minutes a telling ball into the 18 yard area by Conor Lee just failed to reach the incoming Knight. Parkway continued to prompt and probe and build through midfield with Rooney prominent and they almost equalised on 35 minutes.

A free kick saw Booth win a header at the far post with Ben Seymour reacting quickest to the loose ball with his close range effort rebounding of the keeper’s chest and scrambled away with the hosts being awarded a free kick close to the goal line.

Despite the Police having the better of possession in midfield, Parkway continued to work hard and press, denying the hosts any further goal scoring opportunities as their defence remained solid with Booth and Toby Down looking strong and composed when coming under pressure. Approaching half time Parkway almost drew level.

Good play along the right saw Garside, Rooney and Harrison King link well with Beach getting down smartly at his near post to touch a low cross on to the post and behind for a corner.

After a sharp start by the hosts, Parkway gradually got to the pace of the game with neither side creating too many chances, defences generally in control with the hosts just about deserving their slender half time lead.

Parkway made the stronger start to the second half with Garside seeing his long range effort on 49 minutes parried away by Beach with King’s follow up cross being deflected for a corner.

On 52 minutes a Parkway break along the left saw Lane’s cross flash across the 6 yard box with no one able to get the final touch. Parkway continued to press forward and on 57 minutes good work between Rooney and King saw the latter’s cross deflected on to the keeper who punched behind for another corner. Crago replaced Rhead on 57 minutes as Parkway continued to dominate possession but were unable to penetrate the hosts defence with their final ball lacking quality.

On 63 minutes another King cross from the right richocheted around the 6 yard area and fortunately for the hosts was cleared to safety. Toby Stephens replaced the industrious Hall on 66 minutes with Louis Degand also replacing Rodrigues-Alves for the Police. With the hosts now content to absorb pressure and play on the counter, on 68 minutes Knight went clear along the left with his cross being deflected for a corner which was comfortably defended by Parkway.

Parkway continued to press looking to create openings but the hosts defence remained organised and solid. On 73 minutes King saw his a shot from around 18 yards blocked after good link up play with Rooney. Despite their dominance of possession and patient build up play, Parkway were still unable to create any clear cut chances and lacked the guile or clinical touches required to unlock the hosts defence. The final 20 minutes saw a change of formation as Parkway went looking for a way back into the game. This led to space being created at the back and on 73 minutes Knight raced clear on to a long ball along the left and crashed his shot against the bar with Parkes saving at full stretch from Robertson who had latched on the loose ball around 15 yards out. Parkway almost snatched an equaliser on 78 minutes after good work by Mikey Williams, who had now been pushed further forward, and Stephens saw Harry Taylor block a shot with Seymour turning sharply and firing a snap shot narrowly wide from around 18 yards. The hosts continued to defend deep and in numbers and on 84 minutes almost doubled their lead with Taylor-Crossdale going clear unchallenged with his lobbed effort looping over the exposed Parkes but flashing narrowly wide.

Jasper Mather replaced the impressive Taylor-Crossdale for the hosts on 86 minutes with Aaron Goulty coming on for Garside. Parkway continued to push forward in numbers in the 6 minutes of added time during which the Police looked to slow the game down and manage the game out with Lewis Pegg replacing Keeya in the 92nd minute. Despite Parkway pushing hard to the end and managing to force one final save from Beach, they were unable to create any further chances and drew yet another away day scoring blank.

A closely contested game decided by a poorly conceded goal in which Parkway competed well throughout, showing desire and commitment and playing some very good football particularly in the second half. However they lacked the cutting edge and clinical finishing in the final third and were unable to breach the thin blue line of the Met Police who were very well organised and strong defensively.

The paucity of goals away from home has been once again highlighted by the management and is clearly an area of concern. Parkway remain in 21st place but still with games in hand over all other teams.

Their tough schedule remains relentless with 2 more away games this week with a visit to 4th placed Poole Town on Tuesday followed by 11th placed Swindon Supermarine on Saturday
