THE WIZARD STILL HAS A FEW MORE SPELLS TO CAST
By Rob Kershaw
If anyone knows the values of Plymouth Parkway Football Club, Mikey Williams does.
The winger joined Parkway five years ago and has been a crucial part of the development of the squad, weaving his considerable magic on the wing, helping the Yellows to three promotions.
With a new contract in the bag after a title winning campaign in 21-22, the 28-year-old is ready to go again in the Southern League Premier Division South, but it will not be easy.
This is something he understands very well from years of experience, but particularly after two pre-season defeats in a row
“[Buckland & Saltash] was a bit of a reminder really that we’re not going to have it all our own way during certain games,” said Williams.
“Sometimes, we’re going to have to play different styles of football, we sometimes won’t be able to play certain patterns of play, and teams are going to be in our faces.
“And it’s down to us to understand and try and combat that.
“I think it was a good lesson, it is still pre-season, so we’re still learning as a squad and more and more each game.”
The several additions to the squad ahead of this season are set to play an instrumental role in any success Parkway are going to have in the next campaign, and Williams has enjoyed what he has seen from the new boys so far.
“You can see the players that Lee’s brought in are very talented players,” he explained.
“You can tell they’ve played the levels before, and they’ve settled in really well into training and the games.
“[They’ve] bonded nicely with the squad, with the current boys that we’ve got, and I think the more and more game time that we play with each other, the more and more we’ll improve and understand each other’s games.”
As for the new league campaign, Williams is very aware that he and his team-mates are going to have to take some pain, but he is optimistic that they can overcome that challenge.
“I think it’s one of them where we’re going to have to get used to not being on top every single game,” he predicted.
“There’s going to be certain moments when we’re going to be losing games; we’re going to go on losing streaks.
“We’re going to have to deal with that as a team. It’s going to be tough, but I feel like we’re confident and, on our day, I feel like we’ll be more than capable of competing with each and every team in that league.
