After the earlier heavy rain had just about relented, the game kicked off on a greasy but perfectly playable surface. The game got off to a fairly even start with both sides feeling their way with Hungerford’s Nathan Davis launching a couple of early long throws into the 6 yard area which tested the Parkway defence. A sign of things to follow. Parkway created the first opportunity on 6 minutes with a free kick being headed behind for a corner which was comfortably cleared. The host’s Joe Shepherd picked up a yellow card on 8 minutes and it was they who took the lead on 9 minutes.

A Parkway free kick found Jack Crago whose towering header was superbly pushed away by Ryan Clarke in the home goal with the ball being hastily cleared deep into the Parkway half. A misunderstanding between Corey Harvey and Callum Hall resulted in Harvey’s attempted clearance just outside the 18 yard area rebounding off Hall towards the unguarded goal with the alert Michael Fernandes pouncing for an easy tap in from close range.

Despite this setback Parkway continued to compete well and on 11 minutes they broke along the right with Joe Belsten crossing into the danger area and Matt Wright heading narrowly wide. Play continued to flow from end to end with few chances being created by either side and Parkway generally dealing well with a series of long throws in. On 22 minutes the host’s Sean Moore saw yellow for a strong challenge as the game continued to be well contested.

On 23 minutes a typically strong run forward by Mikey Williams saw him lay the ball back to Joe Belsten who fired well over from around 25 yards. The next 5 minutes changed the game. On 25 minutes a free kick from wide on the right was headed powerfully home from close range by the unchallenged Luke Carnell at the far post and the dose was repeated 2 minutes later when a corner from the right was nodded home at the far post by Conor McDonagh to leave Parkway shell shocked.

Hungerford now began to dictate the pace of the game by gaining control of the midfield area and stretching the Parkway defence which came under increasing pressure. On 34 minutes Hungerford had a header hacked off the line and cleared with the dangerous and speedy Fernandes then breaking clear along the left only to be brought down by Oscar Halls who received a yellow card.

Parkway continued to work hard to stem the tide but too often conceded possession, lacked intensity in midfield and were being restricted to hitting long balls to Wright and Crago who were being well marshalled by a solid Hungerford backline who were giving nothing away. The elusive Fernandes continued to provide a constant threat to which Parkway had little answer. On 41 minutes a break long the Parkway right by Belsten resulted in a strong challenge which went unpunished with Hungerford breaking away and creating a half chance.

After lengthy treatment Belsten was assisted from the field with Toby Down coming on as his replacement. Approaching half time Fernandes again broke clear along the left with his angled drive from around 20 yards flying narrowly wide.

Despite conceding a bizarre early goal, Parkway competed well in a fairly even first 20 or so minutes creating a couple of chances. However they were undone in a crazy 2 minute spell midway through the half when they conceded 2 almost identical goals as a result of their inability to defend well flighted and expertly delivered set pieces from the right leaving them a mountain to climb in the second half.

The climb became even steeper straight from the restart. With Aaron Goulty replacing Hall at the break, Parkway looked to have changed their shape and formation with Williams seemingly to be deployed in a more forward role.

The plan was immediately nullified straight from their own kick off when a sloppy pass was intercepted in the centre circle with Ryan Lane shown a straight red card for a reckless and unnecessary challenge. From the resultant free kick into the 18 yard area the impressive McDonagh did well to control the ball, turn sharply and fire home from around 10 yards giving Harvey no chance. On 50 minutes a foul on Harvey by Shepherd just outside the 18 yard area caused a mini melee and once the game resumed Hungerford regained control and increased their lead further from the penalty spot on 62 minutes.

Crago back assisting in defence was unfortunate to be adjudged to have handled the ball after blocking an effort fired at him from close range with debutant McDonagh stepping up to smash home the spot kick to complete his hattrick. Alfie Moulden then replaced Halls for Parkway as Hungerford remained well in control looking dangerous with every attack.

Parkway continued on the back foot offering little going forward other than long clearances towards to the hard working Wright who was winning his fair share of the ball but lacking the necessary support from midfield in and around him.

Elis Watts replaced the strong running McDonagh on 65 minutes taking up a position wide on the right. On 66 minutes Fernandes broke clear down the left with his angled drive being superbly saved by Harvey and cleared away to safety. On 68 minutes with virtually his first involvement in the game Watts received the ball wide on the right, jinked around a couple of attempted tackles, cut inside and fired an unstoppable drive from around 15 yards across the helpless Harvey into the far corner.

Before the restart Jack Alexander replaced Davis for the hosts. With Hungerford now rampant and Parkway being constantly stretched, outfought and outnumbered, the hosts went further ahead on 73 minutes. A cross from the left was not fully cleared with the ball dropping to Fernandes around 18 yards out who finished clinically with a crisp low drive into the bottom corner.

Hungerford were reduced to 10 men on 75 minutes after Harvey had bravely raced outside his area to clear a long through ball only to be flattened by Moore who received his 2nd yellow card with Down also shown yellow for his reaction to the challenge. Hungerford immediately replaced Davis with Toby Thorp. Goulty then did well to work hard and twice dispossess the virtually unstoppable Fernandes close to the bye line to prevent further damage.

The final 10 minutes plus the 3 added minutes of stoppage time saw Hungerford ease off slightly allowing Parkway to get more players forward but without ever looking likely to score with the Hungerford defence remaining solid and Clarke relatively untroubled. The hosts did however almost increase their lead on 85 minutes with substitute Thorp racing clear, cutting in and firing just wide.

Callum Rose was booked in the closing stages for a late challenge probably borne out of frustration as the hosts closed the game out for a convincing and comprehensive victory.

After an encouraging first 20 minutes Parkway gradually became overwhelmed conceding 3 poor goals in the first half and not being at the races in the second after going down to 10 men straight from the restart. The necessary determination and desire shown in previous seasons was not in evidence with too many players falling short of the standards of which they are known to be capable.

After today’s disjointed performance against a strong side, a lot of hard work will be required by the management and staff over the next week to reinstill confidence and belief in the squad before 2 upcoming home games. The growing injury list, the automatic 3 game ban for the Captain and poor discipline will also need to be addressed. With Gosport Borough, who won 2-0 against last season’s play off finalists Bracknell Town today and newly promoted Sholing who went down 3-1 at Hendon the visitors next Saturday and the following Tuesday respectively, vastly improved performances will be required.
