Parkway weather the storm to seal all three points

Parkway visited Salisbury having not won an away league game or even scored a goal on the road since mid October.

Three changes were made from the midweek home draw with Beaconsfield Town with Callum Hall replacing Billy Palfrey and Toby Down in for Callum Rose. Making his debut was young goalkeeper Harry Lee signed on loan from Exeter City 48 hours before, replacing Adam Parkes who had returned to Plymouth Argyle having picked up a recent injury.

Full Match Report

The game got off to a lively start with the hosts on the front foot and Austen Booth blocking an early strike on 4 minutes.

Salisbury continued to play at a high tempo and on 8 minutes a strong run from deep by James Plant saw his cross blocked by Ryan Lane. The hosts were forced into an early substitution with Jerry Lawrence replacing the injured Dan Fitchett.

Parkway were struggling to get to the pace of the game but on 10 minutes a strong run forward by Dan Rooney saw his penetrating through ball intercepted by the Salisbury defence. Salisbury continued to dictate the pace of the game in midfield looking to exploit the wide areas and on 15 minutes a break along the right saw the ball crossed to Calvin Brooks whose shot from 18 yards was blocked by some desperate defending.

Parkway were being outplayed and restricted to playing on the counter but on 17 minutes good play between Ben Seymour and Mikey Williams along the left flank saw Williams roll the ball into the danger area with the ball being cleared off the line.

Salisbury continued to threaten and on 20 minutes a break along the left saw the dangerous Plant go clear only to be denied by an outstanding one on one save by Lee.

From the resultant corner Salisbury thought they had taken the lead after Lee had parried a Plant effort at full stretch with Marvin Brooks tucking away the loose ball from close range but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Salisbury continued to dominate the midfield area with their pace and movement with Parkway unable to gain or retain any meaningful possession as they were forced to defend in numbers with Toby Down looking assured but were offering little going forward.

Parkway were forced into a change on 23 minutes with Booth picking up an injury to be replaced by  Rose who was called into immediate action by blocking a close range shot by the increasingly influential Plant.

The resultant corner saw a scramble in the 6 yard area with Parkway just about managing to clear the danger as they continued to come under pressure.

On 27 minutes another dangerous cross by Brandon Goodship almost led to a goal with the ball being deflected for a corner. On 28 minutes a strong unchallenged run from midfield by Josh Carmichael saw his powerful shot from around 20 yards superbly saved by Lee diving low down to his right.

Lee was called into action again shortly after by rising through a crowd of bodies and punching a corner clear as the Parkway goal bore a charmed life. On 32 minutes a rare Parkway attack along the right saw Rooney link well with Harrison King whose low cross was stabbed just wide from close range.

On 36 minutes a long ball out to the left caught the Salisbury defence off guard with Jack Crago’s angled effort from around 20 yards being saved by the legs of Gerard Benfield in the home goal with Rio Garside blasting the loose ball wide.

Plant continued to impress on the left flank and on 37 minutes only a strong covering tackle by Williams close to the byeline prevented him getting a shot away.

Only another fine save by Lee on 38 minutes from a powerful volley by Olutobi Ogundega kept the scoreline goalless as the hosts continued to press and create chances.

Hall then went clear from midfield into the 18 yard box and wriggled clear of his marker to fire in a shot which was well saved by Benfield.

On 40 minutes a last ditch block tackle by Rose to a shot from Tom McDermott denied the hosts taking the lead as the Parkway defence continued to come under pressure.

The final action in the 5 minutes of added time saw Crago break clear and release Seymour who was closed down by 2 defenders in the 18 yard area and unable to get a shot away.

A half generally dominated by Salisbury playing with intensity and high energy with the lively Plant a constant danger and Seung Yang catching the eye in midfield with his work rate and quality in possession.

Only some last ditch defending and a series of outstanding saves from Lee kept the scoreline blank and Parkway can probably consider themselves fortunate not to be 2 or 3 goals down. They did however create a couple of half chances on the counter late in the half but the hosts would be disappointed not to go into the break with a healthy lead.

Toby Stephens replaced Seymour at the break with the striker appearing to have picked up a knock towards the end of the first half. Stephens slotted into midfield with Hall pushed forward alongside Crago up front.

With Parkway readjusting to a tweak in their formation, Salisbury created an early chance on 50 minutes with Goodship going clear along the right after a good ball by Lawrence with Lee again doing well to block the shot at his near post.

Parkway began to come into the game more with Stephens showing well in midfield with some clever movement and incisive passing.

On 55 minutes Lane and Williams linked well to set up Hall in the 18 yard area who went to ground under a challenge with half hearted appeals for a penalty being waved away.

Play now became more even with Parkway playing with more purpose and energy than in the first half and on 56 minutes Crago pulled a shot narrowly wide when well placed. Play switched to the other end with Plant getting to the byeline and setting up Marvin Brooks who saw his shot blocked.

Parkway were then forced to defend a series of corners with Lee looking confident and comfortable in claiming the high balls and setting attacks in motion with his accurate distribution.

Play then went through a scrappy phase with Rooney picking up a booking for a foul as both teams continued to create half chances but defences remaining firm.

The breakthrough finally came on 73 minutes with Parkway taking the lead. A period of patient build play along the left between Williams, Lane and Crago saw the latter get in behind the home defence to the byeline and send a low cross to the far post where the unmarked Hall tapped in from close range. After the celebrations,

Williams was booked for reasons unknown to the away supporters on the far side. Devon Arnold then replaced Lawrence for the hosts who continued to pressurise the Parkway backline with Lee doing well to smother another dangerous cross at his near post.

Plant continued to cause problems along the left and on 82 minutes his cross was met by Goodship with Lee again making a tremendous save to keep his side in the game.

Lee then denied Arnold with another save as Salisbury desperately searched for an equaliser. However Parkway continued to defend strongly with again Lee looking imposing under the high ball as the crosses rained in. With the clock running down and no doubt conscious of their vulnerability in conceding late goals in some previous games, Parkway looked to slow the game down with Oscar Massey replacing Crago who once gain had put in a terrific shift. In the 4 minutes of added time Massey saw yellow as Salisbury continued to press with Parkway managing to hang on for the win which seemed unlikely at half time.

A proverbial game of 2 halves with Salisbury dominant and superior in the first but Parkway vastly improved in the second showing desire, energy and determination and carving out a rare and much needed 3 points on the road.

Mention should be made of debutant goalkeeper Lee who only met his team mates for the first time when he boarded the bus at Exeter on the way to the game! His saves in the first half undoubtedly kept Parkway in the game allowing them to build a platform from which they were able to go on and win it and his confident ball handling towards the end of the game when under pressure contributed towards the victory which gave them their first double of the season.

A satisfactory 7 days for Parkway gaining 7 points out of 9 and keeping 2 clean sheets a welcome bonus. Today’s win and other results see them climb a place to 17th 2 points clear of the relegation zone but still with numerous games in hand.

There is still much hard work ahead as on Tuesday they travel to 8th placed and in form Merthyr Town who drew 2-2 at Winchester City today before returning to Bolitho Park next Saturday when 21st placed Hartley Wintney are the visitors.
