Parkway look ahead to Ivybridge test

Ivybridge Town vs Parkway | Match Preview

By Alex Haynes

Plymouth Parkway make the short trip up the Devon Expressway to face Ivybridge Town for the second round of the Devon St Lukes Bowl this Wednesday evening. Bad weather ensured the fixture was called off last week, so let’s hope we have better conditions this time around.

Parkway secured their place in the last 16 against Brixham AFC back in September. The sides couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes and the game finished 1-1 at Wall Park, but the Yellows were victorious in a tense penalty shootout that ended 5-4. Town also progressed via a penalty shootout after their match with Torquay United ended in a 2-2 draw.

The squad will be fired up going into this game after beating high-flying Walton & Hersham 2-1 at the weekend. Dylan Jones scored a last-gasp goal to make sure that Parkway recorded their first away win of the season. It was a much needed three points and confidence will be high, but we will need to stay focused to get past our opponents on Wednesday.

Ivybridge currently sit at the top of the South West Peninsula League Premier East having won 13 of their 14 games so far. The Ivies may be three tiers below Parkway, but they will be well prepared and a threat in front of goal.

Parkway have enjoyed lots of success in the Challenge Cup in previous years. They were the tournament winners in 2018 after beating Bideford AFC 4-1 and reached the final again in 2019 where they were beaten 2-1 by Exeter City. The Yellows would have their revenge against the Grecians last season though by beating them 7-2 in the first round of the competition at Bolitho.

This is our last chance at a good cup run this season and the lads will be confident they can progress on Wednesday.

We last came up against Ivybridge just before our title-winning season in the Southern League Division One South in 2021. A pre-season friendly ended 2-1 to Parkway at ErmeValley. Mikey Willams and Callum Hall were on the scoresheet that day.
