Dorchester and the FA Cup

Parkway v Dorchester Town | Match Preview

By Alex Haynes

The FA Cup is back, and Plymouth Parkway will take on Dorchester Town in the first round of qualifying. It all goes down at Bolitho this Saturday, so make sure you’re there to support the lads and help them get into the hat for the second round.

Last season, Parkway went on a gallant run in the tournament, beating Didcot and North Leigh on their way to a third-round qualifying match with Oxford City. It ended in a 1-1 draw, but the Yellows suffered a 3-1 defeat in the replay after taking it to extra time. They did themselves proud against higher league opposition and will look to do the same again this time around.

Dorchester were knocked out at the second qualifying round stage in the last campaign following a 1-0 loss to Swindon Supermarine. Back in the 12/13 season, they famously beat Plymouth Argyle in the first round of the main draw before being eliminated by Luton Town in the second round after a 2-1 loss.

Dorchester are divisional rivals and a familiar foe. In the 22/23 campaign, The Magpies beat Parkway 3-1 at The Avenue Stadium in the third game of the season. The Yellows were far more convincing in the reverse fixture at Bolitho, winning 3-0. Rio Garside was among the goal scorers that day.

The two sides also have history in cup competitions, with Parkway knocking Dorchester out of the FA Trophy in the third qualifying round last season with a 2-0 win.

After going 2-0 up in the first half against Tiverton on bank holiday Monday, Parkway relinquished their lead and ended up having to settle for a 2-2 draw. This was largely down to the fact that they were reduced to nine men (captain Ryan Lane and forward Jack Crago receiving red cards) and could not hold on. Like Parkway, Dorchester have had a difficult start to the season, but bounced back in their most recent outing defeating Poole Town 2-1.

The FA Cup provides a fun and exciting atmosphere, and there is always entertainment to be found when these sides play each other. Cup games are always unpredictable, but with the crowd and momentum on their side, Parkway will fancy their chances of progression into the next round.
