First Things First
The Preview: Parkway vs Wimborne TownBy Kian Williams
Parkway host Wimborne Town under the lights tomorrow night, as they look to bounce back after their impressive seven game unbeaten league run came to an end on Saturday at the hands of Chichester City.
Rocky Neal opened the scoring with his tenth goal of the campaign midway through the first half, before Chichester responded with a goal of their own before the interval. The Lilywhites then struck twice in the second half to claim all three points and end Parkway’s mini unbeaten run.
Curtis spoke to Parkway TV after his side’s loss and said “When you lose any game of football, you want to get back on the grass and try to put it right.” He followed on saying “We’ve got to be back at it again and get back to those performances that have got us those results at Bolitho.”
Saturday proved costly as Parkway lost their chance to return to the top of the Southern League Premier South, but the focus must now switch to another important game tomorrow night where in-form Wimborne Town are the opposition. A side who themselves are on a seven game unbeaten league run.
After a winless start to the season, with losses against Frome Town and Chichester, Wimborne have responded magnificently with a seven game unbeaten league run of their own. Only conceding one goal in this run, which came against Gloucester City on the 15th of August.
The Magpies form across all competitions is even more impressive as they currently sit on a run of 13 games unbeaten. Wimborne still remain in both the FA Cup as well as the FA Trophy, meaning both Parkway and Wimborne face significant games at the weekend, as they compete for a place in the first round of the FA Cup. A place the Yellows have never been before, whilst the Magpies haven’t qualified for the first round since the 1982-83 season, where they were defeated 4-0 by Aldershot Town, 44 years ago.
This is a side who have also scored twelve goals in their last three games, meaning Parkway’s defence will need to weather the storm of the Magpies’ high-flying frontline if they want any chance of returning to winning ways. The Magpies entertained Havant & Waterlooville at the weekend in a fascinating nine goal thriller, as they ran out 6-3 winners. This capped off a perfect week for Wimborne as they dismantled Yate Town 4-0, just a few days prior.
Parkway have had mixed fortunes against Wimborne, after the Magpies returned to the division after promotion from the Southern League Division One South in the 2023/24 season. With both teams claiming respective home victories in the previous campaign.
Last season, Wimborne hosted and came from behind to beat Parkway 3-2, before the Yellows responded brilliantly in the return match with a dramatic 3-2 win of their own. Two goals from Jensen Ireland and one from Mikey Williams meant Parkway came from a goal behind to claim all three points and avenge the loss they had suffered earlier in the season.
If history repeats itself for a third game in a row, Bolitho could play host to another entertaining, high-scoring game of football, which surely cannot be missed.
For Parkway, a Tuesday night under the lights at Bolitho could prove the perfect opportunity to put Saturday’s unfortunate loss behind them and return to winning ways.
After Mikey Williams returned from a knock at the weekend, after he had missed the magical FA Cup comeback win against Horsham, Curtis will have a fully fit squad to choose from, whilst also having one eye on the important final qualifying round of the FA Cup against Chertsey Town on Saturday.
Curtis knows there is no time to dwell on the weekend’s result. “Just be us” was the clear message he gave, as the Parkway boss looked ahead to midweek as he wanted his side to “get back on the bike and get going again.”
A positive response is required, as Parkway look to get one of the biggest weeks in their history off to the perfect start.
