Thumbs up as Parkway produce a fine display to take the points against the Magpies

Full Match Report

Parkway returned to Bolitho Park for the 2nd time in 4 days looking to build on their 5 match unbeaten run against 7th placed Dorchester Town who were unchanged from their starting 11 last Saturday.

Parkway made 2 changes from Saturday with Aaron Goulty replacing the rested Harrison King and Austen Booth, returning from injury, starting in place of Toby Stephens. Included amongst the 5 substitutes were Gabriel Billington another loanee from Exeter City signed earlier in the day having been recalled from his loan at Poole Town.

There was also a welcome return to the squad for Tom Bath 10 months to the day since suffering his serious Achilles injury at the end of last season.

The game got off to an explosive start with Parkway taking the lead with barely a minute on the clock. From the visitors kick off, Parkway won possession deep in their own half with the ball played out to Rio Garside wide on the left. His drilled cross reached the unmarked Ben Seymour at the far post who volleyed home an angled drive from around 10 yards.

Buoyed by their early goal, Parkway playing with intensity and at a high tempo quickly doubled their lead.

On 10 minutes the Dorchester defence were unable to deal with a long kick out from Harry Lee with the ball dropping to Garside whose spectacular strike with the outside of his left foot from around 30 yards arrowed into the top left hand corner with Ryan Hall in the visitors goal nowhere. Surely a contender for goal of the season.

Parkway continued to dominate possession looking to build on their 2 goal cushion with Dorchester struggling to get to the pace of the game.

However on 14 minutes a long ball over the defence found Charlie Gunson going clear with Toby Down doing well to match the run and block the shot. The game continued at a fast pace with Parkway controlling the midfield and looking to exploit the wide areas at every opportunity with the tenacious Callum Hall, Dan Rooney and Garside pressing the opposition all over the pitch.

Dorchester were forced to make a change in the 19th minute with Alfie Stanley replacing Gunson who was unable to continue after failing to recover from a firm but fair challenge by Booth. With Parkway in full flow and Dorchester working hard to stem the tide, the hosts almost increased their lead on 27 minutes. From a free kick wide on the right, Garside’s well flighted effort clipped the angle of the woodwork going behind for a goal kick with Hall well beaten.

Parkway remained in control displaying high energy levels moving the ball at pace as they continued to prompt and probe openings.

Dorchester offered little going forward and despite competing well were being forced on to the defensive as they looked to stay in the game with at times some desperate defending.

On 34 minutes Kieran Douglas saw yellow for persistent infringements as the visitors continued to come under pressure from a rampant Parkway.

The visitors Alex Moyse caught the eye with his creativity in midfield but lacked support and when the visitors did manage to mount any attacks, the Parkway defence remained solid with Booth, Down and Callum Rose forming a formidable barrier with Lee remaining untested.

Parkway continued to dictate play without creating too many more clear chances as half time approached with the visitors Jordan Ngalo seeing yellow for a foul in the added minute of stoppage time.

A blistering, high energy start by Parkway who took the game away from a shell shocked Dorchester in the early stages and remained comfortably in the ascendancy thereafter with the visitors failing to register a single effort on target.

The second half started pretty much as the first with again Parkway getting an early goal to increase their lead in the 48th minute with arguably their best move of the game.

A superb passage of play along the left with a series of one touch passes and slick movement involving Hall, Garside, Jack Crago and Ryan Lane which sliced through the Dorchester defence saw Lane reach the bye line and deliver a quality cross to the far post.

Seymour displaying a striker’s instinct of being in the right place at the right time created himself enough space to be perfectly positioned to steer the ball home from close range.

The game continued at a lively pace with Parkway remaining in control with Dorchester continuing to compete well but restricted to the occasional counter attack.

On 52 minutes a through ball almost reached Shaquille Gwengwe but once again the attack was halted by firm Parkway defending.

Jordan Foot surprisingly replaced Moyse for the visitors on 57 minutes as the pace of the game began to slow with Parkway content to retain possession and conserve energy.

On 59 minutes Gwengwe received a yellow card for a petulant kick on Booth with no attempt to play the ball and can probably consider himself fortunate not to see red.

Parkway continued to threaten and on the hour a Crago header from another free kick was deflected for a corner. Billy Palfrey replaced the commanding Rose on 62 minutes with the central defender leaving the field somewhat gingerly.

On 68 minutes a Parkway break saw the non stop Hall latch on to a long ball and go clear only to pull his shot from around 15 yards narrowly wide. With the pace of the game continuing to slow, both sides made changes around the 72nd minute with Billington on debut replacing the busy Rooney and Louie Slough replacing Tiago Sa for the visitors.

On 75 minutes Ryan Hall did well to gather a cross under pressure after good work between Garside and Callum Hall both of whom continued to display high energy levels constantly pressuring the opposition when in possession denying them time or space on the ball.

Approaching the final 10 minutes with Parkway dropping deeper, Dorchester began to gain more forward momentum but were still unable to register an effort on target with Lee again looking confident under the high ball easily gathering a couple of flighted crosses.

On 81 minutes Bath made his long awaited comeback when replacing Crago who again had worked tirelessly throughout with his chasing, closing down, winning numerous headers and generally giving defenders an uncomfortable time.

On 85 minutes a cross to the far post by Slough picked out Harvey-Joe Bertrand who headed into the side netting for Dorchester’s first clear chance of the game.

Play switched to the other end and the persistent Seymour did well to rob the Dorchester keeper way out of his area close to the left hand touch line with his cross into the 18 yard area being cleared to safety with no Parkway player in support. In the first of 3 added minutes, a low cross from the right saw Lee, having been relatively untested throughout the game, gather comfortably at his near post.

The final action of the game saw Parkway force a corner which came to nothing with the referee calling time shortly after.

A vastly improved performance by Parkway after Saturday’s stuttering, lacklustre goalless draw with Hartley Wintney.

Playing with intensity throughout, the game was virtually sealed in the first 10 minutes and they went on to dominate the game against an at times passive Dorchester who worked hard, competed and defended well but were outplayed and outfought and created nothing until the last 10 minutes.

The win sees the Parkway’s unbeaten run extended to 6 games with a 4th consecutive clean sheet and just the 1 goal conceded in those 6 games.

After other results tonight, Parkway remain in 15th place but are now 5 points clear of the relegation zone and still with those important games in hand.

In what will be a challenging 3 weeks coming up, Parkway must now look to build on their recent momentum as they start a sequence of 6 games, 2 at home and 4 away, with 5 of those games against teams below them in the league.

After a short period of rest and recovery they have back to back away games at Winchester City on Saturday followed by North Leigh next Tuesday before returning to Bolitho Park on Saturday week when Yate Town are the visitors.
