Parkway v Farnham Town | Match Report

Despite a sunny few days in Plymouth, the rain returned as Parkway welcomed second-placed Farnham Town to Bolitho Park for matchday 36 in the Southern League Premier South.

Following a valuable point on the road at Evesham United, Parkway returned home with a lengthy injury list, as Ryan Brett, Rocky Neal, Mikey Williams, Callum Hall and Mitch Beardmore were all ruled out. That meant opportunities for others, with starts handed to Reece Shanley and Will Sullivan, while Jack Veale and club captain Shane White both returned to the starting XI.

Full Match Report

Farnham arrived in Devon sitting second in the table after an impressive first season at this level and it was the visitors who settled quickest into their passing rhythm. Parkway, operating with Shanley holding in midfield and White and Veale restored to the defensive three, showed clear organisation and work rate from the outset.

The visitors enjoyed the lion’s share of possession during the opening exchanges, with Parkway content to sit in and look to counter. Both Rio and Carlo Garside worked tirelessly in midfield, while Sullivan led the line with energy despite limited service.

Farnham made their pressure count around the half-hour mark when Seb Bowerman found space inside the area and struck low to give the visitors the lead. Parkway’s response was immediate. Building down the left, Sullivan was bundled over inside the box, leaving the referee with little hesitation in pointing to the spot. Shane White stepped forward and calmly converted to restore parity.

Parkway grew into the contest late in the half, with Carlo Garside’s forward run drawing a foul before Rio Garside picked out Taylor Scarff, whose header caused brief panic before Farnham cleared.

Parkway remained unchanged at the break and continued the hard work shown in the first half. Shanley grew into his holding role, while Rio Garside began to show glimpses of the form that saw him named Player of the Season last term.

Farnham continued to control possession, but Parkway’s defensive discipline remained strong. The visitors had the ball in the net early in the half only for the linesman’s flag to deny them, while appeals for a penalty following a ball-to-hand incident were waved away.

The visitors continued to push, and Uche saw a powerful effort tipped superbly away by Frankie Phillips, who would prove instrumental throughout the second period.

On 67 minutes, Bolitho rose as one. Rio Garside drove forward with purpose and teed up Reece Thomson, who made no mistake to put Parkway ahead for the first time on the night.

Farnham responded with urgency, but Phillips remained in inspired form, producing key stops to deny Bobby Joe Taylor and claw away what looked like a certain goal from a corner.

Parkway continued to threaten when able, with Thomson and Rio Garside both involved in forward moments, while at the other end Shane White led by example, putting his body on the line to repel Farnham attacks.

Substitute Joe Hatch replaced the hardworking Sullivan late on as Parkway managed the closing stages, with Taylor remaining Farnham’s biggest threat as the minutes ticked away.

But Parkway dug deep and produced a result that many would not have thought possible. To a man they were outstanding, securing a hard-earned victory that lifts the Yellows to 13th place — though with plenty still to do, beginning with a difficult trip to Gloucester City on Saturday afternoon.
