Late heartbreak strikes again for Parkway

Yate Town 2–1 Plymouth Parkway Match Report

Plymouth Parkway suffered yet more late heartbreak on the road as Yate Town snatched a stoppage-time winner to claim all three points at the South West Interiors Stadium. The Bluebells, newly promoted to the Southern League Premier South, took advantage of a fragile Parkway side still struggling to see out matches.

Defeat leaves Chris McPhee’s men back in the relegation zone after ten games, capping a wretched week for the travelling Yellow Army.

For Parkway, it was a painful continuation of a damaging pattern. Just last Saturday they were pegged back by a stoppage-time equaliser at Berkhamsted, before surrendering a 2–1 lead to lose 3–2 at Wimborne. At Yate, the late curse struck again, Oli Jenkins pouncing deep into added time to condemn Parkway to a third straight away disappointment in seven days.

The opening 45 minutes were cagey and short on quality, both sides showing signs of low confidence. Parkway, bruised by recent setbacks, struggled to find rhythm, while Yate rarely threatened until a defensive lapse changed the complexion of the game.

On 35 minutes, Jack Veale, otherwise solid in recent weeks, found himself on the wrong side of Yate’s number 8 Rex Mannings, and pulled the midfielder down inside the box. Yate striker Marlon Jackson stepped up and confidently dispatched the penalty, giving the hosts a slender advantage at the break.

The second half initially offered little improvement, with both sides tentative and lacking purpose. Yet Parkway finally produced a moment of quality on 54 minutes. Ryan Brett orchestrated a neat passage of passing before feeding youngster James Watts-Barciela. The teenager twisted his marker inside out and delivered a superb cross, met perfectly by Cruis Nyadayo for his second goal in three games.

That equaliser injected belief, but instead of seizing control, the match settled into a game of cat and mouse. Parkway welcomed back striker Rocky Neal after a lengthy injury lay-off, but his introduction failed to spark the cutting edge McPhee’s men desperately needed.

As the clock ticked into the final ten minutes, nerves spread through the Parkway ranks and Yate grew in confidence, spurred on by their home support. A warning sign arrived when Rocky Neal was forced to clear a looping corner off the line. But two minutes later, Parkway’s frailty from set pieces was punished Another corner was swung in, and this time Jenkins escaped his marker to head home the decisive goal.

The squad now returns to Bolitho Park next weekend, where home comforts at the “Theatre of Trees” will be sorely needed. With Gosport Borough visiting in the FA Trophy’s third qualifying round, McPhee’s men must find a performance,  and a result, to reignite their season.
