The first of two games in three days awaits Plymouth Parkway this Bank Holiday weekend, with Karl Curtis’ side making the journey to Evesham United on Saturday before returning to Bolitho Park to face Poole Town on Monday.
It is a demanding schedule, but one Parkway will approach with confidence after Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Havant & Waterlooville maintained their perfect home record and delivered seven points from the opening four matches.
The win was another demonstration of the different qualities developing within Curtis’ side. After the attacking fireworks of the 7-0 victory over Bracknell Town, Parkway have shown resilience at Bath, fought until the end at Chippenham and then produced the character required to protect a narrow advantage against Havant.
Rocky Neal’s fourth goal in four games from the penalty spot brought Parkway level after Paul McCallum had given the visitors the lead, before Callum Hall’s fine finish put the Yellows ahead before half-time. The second half demanded a different response as Havant applied late pressure, but Parkway’s defensive unit stood firm to secure another three points at Bolitho Park.
Now attention turns to Evesham and the first part of a weekend that could provide an early test of the squad’s depth and adaptability.
The Robins have also taken six points from their opening four matches, although their campaign has already produced some sizeable swings in results. Victories away at Basingstoke Town and at home to Chichester City have been followed by heavy defeats against Frome Town and Hanworth Villa, with Evesham conceding four goals in each of those losses.
There is plenty of youthful promise within the Evesham squad. Brandon Liggett, a 20-year-old midfielder who came through the Cheltenham Town academy before spells with Salisbury and a permanent move to the Robins, has already found the net four times this season.
Kai Churchley is another attacking threat. The forward came through the Bristol City academy and has since gained experience with Tiverton Town, Merthyr Town and Gloucester City, scoring three times during the opening four games.
At the other end of the pitch, Jyrel Bojang has been ever-present so far. The centre-half and right-back has started all four matches since making the step up from Step 4 this summer and has already added a goal to his contribution.
History offers little to separate the sides. The clubs have met four times, with Parkway winning twice, Evesham once and the other encounter ending level. The Robins do, however, hold the edge on home soil, with Parkway yet to win at The Spiers & Hartwell Stadium after suffering one defeat and recording one draw.
For Curtis, the challenge will be managing his squad across a weekend where the next fixture is never far away. After four games, Parkway have already demonstrated the value of having options available, and another full week of preparation is replaced by the quickest turnaround of the season so far.
There is no doubt that attention will eventually turn towards Monday and the return to Bolitho. But first comes Evesham. One away day. One opportunity to add three more points. And the opening chapter of a Bank Holiday weekend that could have plenty more to say about Parkway’s early-season progress.
